Kitchen Culture
The exhibition Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen explores the twentieth-century transformation of the kitchen as a bridgehead of modern thinking in the domestic sphere—a testing ground for new materials, technologies, and power sources, where designers could also exercise growing modern concerns for hygiene, efficiency, and the rational organization of space. This special dinner features live music, performance art, a napkin-folding workshop, and background on the exhibition, as well as a typical meal served in Germany at the time of the Frankfurt Kitchen (designed 1926–27), a Counter Space highlight. Participants are invited to submit a recipe for a dessert competition, and the winner will have the opportunity to prepare the dessert with Cafe 2’s chef in advance of the event. With Juliet Kinchin, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, MoMA; Robert Rotifer, musician; Tracy Wilson, General Manager, Art Food Cafés, The Museum of Modern Art; Executive Chef Lynn Bound of the Art Food Cafés; and performance artist Nicolas Dumit Estevez.
