Healthbeat Brooklyn Eps. 49
Original air date: 2/1/2011Asthma in the Black Community: Brooklyn’s black neighborhoods have some of the highest rates of asthma in New York City. We visit two treatment and management workshops, run by Long Island University and Not One More Life. One’s aimed at asthma sufferers, the other at health professionals. Breast-Fed Babies and Obesity: Doctors say mothers who breast-feed are doing the right thing for their infants, especially since their children will be much less likely to be overweight than bottle-fed babies. Why, and what is NYC doing to encourage the practice? Host Monica Sweeney, MD, talks to Dr. Lorraine Byrd of the Bureau of Maternal, Infant & Reproductive Health. Health in a Blender: The young mother who opened Healthy Nibbles on Flatbush Ave wanted a place where her young son could get something more than chips to eat. She swears by her fresh juices and other organic fare; a Brooklyn Hospital nutritionist weighs in on their benefits. S.A.D.: What many people write off as “the winter blues” may actually be the serious mood disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder. “Shedding light” on the diagnosis is just one of the creative therapies that help patients cope.
