Volcanic Ash – When is it a Threat to Airflight?
Scientists are trying to find out how much of a threat volcanic ash poses to jet engines and aircraft wind screens. Little was known about these issues when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in April 2010, grounding planes at airports across Europe.Researchers want to assess the damage the sharp-edged ash particles can do to engine parts. They are also developing a multi-layer coating to protect jet engine blades at high temperatures.
