Many analysts have predicted the 2009 first half stock rally would end in May, June and now in July. What has happened to the market? Some suggest fund flow, under the low interest environment, along with sentiment bouyed by the prospect that the worst may be over are key reasons for the surge. Will the HSI test an even higher level in the second half? Or will investors see a major correction? The government is forecasting more economic contraction and rising unemployment, but for some reason investment banks are upgrading their forecasts for the property sector. And we are seeing some signs of a rebound in property. Money magazine looks at what we can expect going forward. Some the biggest banks in the US have started paying back the money given to them by the government under the Troubled Asset Relief Program(TARP). Is this a sign the corner has been turned on the road to economic recovery? Or is there the danger that if there’s another drop in the stock market that the banks will have to go back to the government, hat in hand?
