Croatia: Protecting Local Bears
Up to one thousand brown bears are thought to live in Croatia’s forests. A special bear protection plan is set to make sure their population numbers remain at current levels. Street traffic poses the greatest danger to Croatia's bears. The installation of several green bridges along the freeway toward Zagreb, measuring up to 100 meters across, are designed to ensure that bears and other animals can make it safely across the motorway. Croatia has even constructed a refuge center just for brown bears.
