Philip-Lorca Dicorcia: Artist’s Talk
Philip-Lorca diCorcia is best known for his celebrated photographs of passers-by, seemingly lost in the streets of big cities.08.06.2003 Philip-Lorca diCorcia is best known for his celebrated photographs of passers-by, seemingly lost in the streets of big cities. His subject is chance and serendipity, yet his way of introducing artificiality, of lighting, pose and staging, gives his images the unreal character of fashion shoots or movie stills. They are fictions that adopt the rhetoric of documentary. DiCorcia has worked as a commercial photographer, as well as showing in major art galleries internationally. His work features in Tate Modern’s exhibition Cruel and Tender: the Real in the Twentieth Century Photograph, and his show A Storybook Life can be seen at The Whitechapel Art Gallery from 7 June to 24 August, 2003.
