Local expert weighs in on Libya operation
With the United States military involved in Libya, it may be difficult for President Barack Obama to order large amounts of ground troops into the country. U.S. operations in Libya have largely been air attacks, which have included the launch of dozens of Tomahawk missiles. Dr. Mark Peceny, the chairman of the Department of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, says the U.S. lacks military resources to send a large amount of U.S. troops into Libya. "It’s extremely unlikely that ground troops will be used in large numbers in Libya because we have these on-going wars in Afghanistan and Iraq," Peceny said. President Obama has received criticism for not explaining the country's exact role and interests in Libya during the first days of the attacks. "I don't think the Obama Administration would have moved forward without the approval of the United Nations Security Council and The Arab League," Peceny said.
