Saving a porcupine’s life, for my friend, Beverly
iReport — My elderly friend, Beverly, who lives in Florida, a transplant from NJ, says she has never seen a porcupine, other than the one that I showed on CNN i-Report, a few days ago.Tonight, another one stopped in the road to show me his/her spines, and that’s why they get run over so easily. They think my car is going to bite them, and instead of scampering off the road (a natural defense for a squirrel or a chipmunk), they stop to face away from the vehicle to protect themselves with their spines, as if the car would bite them. Millions of years of genetic training are not undone by a hundred years of automotive invention.Of course, I have the luxury of setting my cruise control at 37 mph, but most people are pressured for time, and travel at 50 mph, or more, so I used to see a lot of these little guys, crushed on the road.Since the recession, housing bust, and expensive gas, I see about one third the traffic I used to encounter when traveling back and forth to centers of population, so I don't see anywhere near the amount of dead animals on the road as I used to. The population of scavengers, that used to enjoy good, freshly killed carcasses, on Route 169, are not happy with this development. :)
