World Music: Kal, "Ding Deng Dong"
(Serbia) What is gypsy music, actually? And what is the gypsy tradition? Well, for one thing, Roma have always been really great at integrating different musical styles into their own. Kal (which means "black" in Romanes) is part of that tradition, and in their music you can hear both Serbian and Gypsy folk music living alongside modern pop and rock sensibilities. This is no reverb drenched rehash, but rather a lively and thoughtful combination presented by the brothers Dragan and Dusan Ristic, who are part of a new generation of educated, proud Roma. Of course that does not stop the video from playing with some stereotypes of the Roma as shady characters!Purchase the album.
