India Bird Flu
Hungry chicken gather at one place in a poultry farm in the bird flu effected Rangamati village 55 Kms. from Guwahati city, northeast India, 04 December 2008. As the culling operation started in this area the farm owners have stopped giving food to the chicks. The dreaded disease caused by the H5N1 virus has affected more than 40 villages in Kamrup district of Assam. Forty Rapid Response Teams have been formed to conduct the culling operations in an area of three kilometer radius in each of the blocks for eliminating the entire poultry population. Already 46500 backyard birds have been killed so far and more than 2 lakh farm poultry will be killed in next one week. Ban has been imposed on poultry and poultry products in the entire Kamrup district of Assam. EPA/STR
