Scrums MPs voted in favour of saving the controversial federal long-gun registry. The vote was 153 for and 151 against the Liberal motion to scrap Conservative MP Candice Hoeppner’s private member’s bill to abolish the registry. Hoeppner and Conservative MP Steven Blaney, opposition leaders Michael Ignatieff, Gilles Duceppe, Jack Layton, and NDP MP Niki Ashton spoke to reporters after the vote. Ashton was one of six NDP MPs who sided with the Conservatives and voted against saving the registry. Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn and NDP Defence critic Jack Harris spoke to reporters about the privacy breach of Sean Bruyea, an outspoken veterans critic.
