Flooding Devastates Pakistan, Northwest China
(Al Jazeera English News Headlines: August 10, 2010) The United Nations announced an appeal to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for the victims of the recent floods in Pakistan. Thousands of people continue to be evacuated from Pakistan’s central Punjab province. Flooding in northwest China has caused devastating landslides, killing hundreds and burying entire buildings. Child deaths in Afghanistan have increased by half and civilian casualties have risen by almost a third over the last year, according to a United Nations report. The bulk of these deaths were caused by insurgent fighters, while deaths caused by NATO airstrikes are on the decline. Rwanda's incumbent president Paul Kagame appears to have won his second seven-year term in office, winning more than 92 percent of the vote based on preliminary election results. Old tanks are being used to create new reefs off Thailand's beaches, with the aim of nurturing new habitat for fish.
