Bill Warns Internet Providers To Store Info
Republicans introduced yesterday a “law and order agenda” under legislation that would require all Internet service providers to track their customers’ online activities to assist police in future investigations. The bill warns Internet providers that if they fail to store that information, they face fines and up to one year in prison.A 1996 federal law called the Electronic Communication Transactional Records Act requires Internet service providers to retain any “record” in their possession for 90 days upon request of the government. The U-S Department of Justice could confiscate those records forever.Republican Lamar Smith of Texas described it as an essential anti-cyber crime measure. “The legislation introduced today will give law enforcement the tools it needs to find and prosecute criminals.”This bill also requires sexually explicit Web sties owners to place warnings on their pages or face imprisonment. This mimics a proposal approved by a Senate committee, but never got a floor vote. Right now, there are no limits on how broad the rules can be, forcing Internet providers to keep logs of Web browsing, instant messages, or emails. However, the bill doesn’t cover search engines or Web hosting companies. Other bills in the Republicans “law and order agenda” relate to terrorism, drug trafficking, the death penalty, gangs, and computer data breaches.
