Novel Digital Technologies and Women
The U.S. Public Health Service’s Office on Women's Health has been providing leadership for advancement of novel digital technologies that appear to be promising for improved diagnostic and characterization of breast lesions, such as 1) digital x-ray mammography, 2) non-ionizing radiation technologies (MRI, ultrasound), 3) nuclear medicine and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and 4) sterotactic needle biopsy. These digital technologies are expected to improve image quality, and therefore, lesion detection compared to conventional mammography and also to open new avenues, such as electronic image processing for enhanced lesion visualization, computer-aided diagnosis for enhanced image interpretation, creation of digital image databases for superior information management, and telemammography for facilitated expert consultation.
