On this patrol boat, she’s the one giving orders. Barbara Tesch, 27, is a lieutenant in Germany's navy, the Bundesmarine. She's one of almost 17,000 women serving in Germany's armed forces. All branches of the defense services have been open to women for the past 10 years. Previously, they were permitted only as medics or in military orchestras. The defense ministry plans to recruit thousands of additional women in the coming years.
