In this Earth Focus interview, Oxfam’s Gawain Kripke discusses climate change and its effects on global food security.  Aside from more obvious, immediate effects, more insidious results of climate change will impact food sources. Farmers and the agricultural industry will be most affected. Poorer nations are most reliant upon agriculture; around 80% of the African work force is based around it. Changes in watersheds and water-flow from glaciers, rooted in climate change, present a major challenge to agriculture in many regions. Policy and cultural changes must be made in order to help maintain and sustain the future of agriculture, and of the world's food supply. In response to whether or not the world is prepared for this shortage of food, Kripke notes that in 2008, the world received a shock with the increase in food prices, inspiring global leaders to reinvest in agriculture. Kripke argues that we need a global treaty in order to secure agriculture's stability in the future. The poorest nations are the most vulnerable. We, as wealthier nations, have a moral obligation to help those people who have contributed least to the causes of climate change.
