Park becomes historic site
During the Civil War era, Hobbs Park was home to abolitionist writer John Speer. It also played host to Negro League baseball games in 1949. But in 1975, Lawrence almost lost Hobbs Park. Proposed road construction almost forced the city to tear down the baseball diamond and playground. Mark Kaplan, Lawrence resident, has lived across from the park since 1969. Kaplan petitioned to keep the park from being removed.
