John Baldessari discusses his career with fellow artist Simon Patterson.08.10.2009 A pioneer of conceptual art in the late 1960s John Baldessari’s 50-year career has expanded from early text-based canvases executed by sign painters towards an examination of language, photography, collage and photomontage, including his trademark appropriation of subliminal images in advertising and popular culture.  Baldessari’s experimental approach to art making also encompasses curating, publishing, speaking and teaching. Based in Los Angeles, where he has taught for the last 30 years, he has inspired and influenced generations of artists. Having been awarded the 2009 Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement at the 53rd Venice Biennale and just before the opening of his exhibition at Tate Modern, John Baldessari: Pure Beauty, the artist discusses his career with fellow artist Simon Patterson.
