Digital Tipping Point: home audio video buff Marc Merlin 01 (2005)
This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. This series of segments features Linux sysadmin wizard Marc Merlin. Marc has worked for some of the big Silicon Valley Linux companies as a Linux sysadmin and engineer, and so you might expect him to apply his code magic to areas of his personal life, but wait until you see what he does. Marc wired his entire house with Linux, Free Open Source Software, and scripts he wrote to remotely control audio and video, as well as control lighting and other devices throughout his house. Maybe we can’t all wire our homes the way that a wizard like Marc can, but Marc's experience wiring his home are a small example of the freedom to explore that is offered by Free Open Source Software. As our very own DTP video software technician, Jonathan Grindstaff says in his own interview, with proprietary tools, you can get creative with the features that are offered. With Free Open Source Software, you can just imagine what you want to do, and then create new features. The sky's the limit. Marc Merlin shows us that you can virtually build anything you'd like in your house with Free Open Source Software.
