World Music: Mountain People, "30 Years"
(China) Hailing from Yunnan Province in southwestern China, the group Shan Ren has, since its inception, explored the integration of western pop and rock with elements of Chinese rural folk music. The title "30 Years" refers to the age of the main character as he explains how his dreams to marry his perfect woman and to get the perfect job have come to nothing. In a continuing theme with many other Mountain People songs, the lyrics and video depict the difficulties and hardships faced by country folk when faced with the adjustments required for modern city living. There is a definite earthy sense of humor operating here, as our country bumpkin seems to stumble from one weird situation to another, both above and below ground!
