NAB ’11: HDx Optical Adapters
Broadcast lenses are available in high zoom ratios with wide apertures in a relatively compact size, making them desirable for many large-sensor camera users. Designed and built for AbelCine by IB/E Optics, HDx Optical Adapters mount between a B4-mount 2/3” lens and a large sensor camera, expanding the projected light to cover the image area. HDx Optical Adapters are available in three versions to fit different camera models. Read on to learn all about the family of adapters. The HDx Optical Adapter turns the B4 lens into a longer focal length lens, so that the relative depth of field expected for the larger sensor is achieved, while the usual field of view when the lens is mounted to a 2/3” camera is maintained. All HDx Optical Adapters also optically correct for the different spectral alignment between three-chip prism block sensors, for which the B4-mount lenses were designed, and the single sensor of the large sensor cameras. HDx Optical Adapters are highly telecentric in design, delivering a bright, sharp image across the entire frame, with excellent color and contrast. AbelCine offers three models of HDx Optical Adapters. The original HDx2 B4/PL covers a 22mm image circle, which is appropriate for the Phantom Flex, v640 and v641 at 1920×1080 resolution; the RED One at all 3K formats; and the AF100 with use of a PL mount adapter. The HDx2-MFT is designed to mount directly to the AF100 or GH-2 cameras using the native Micro 4/3 mount. The HDx35 B4/PL covers a much larger image circle, making it appropriate for the Arri ALEXA, the Sony F35, SRW-9000PL, PMW-F3, NEX-FS100 (with mount adapter), and even the newly announced F65. It also will cover the full 4K image area of the RED One, as well as the 5K 16×9 area of the RED EPIC.
