Coronary artery disease is the buildup of plaque in blood vessels that can cause a heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol is the primary substance in plaque, and it is one of the most established risk factors for heart disease. There are two types of cholesterol, low-density cholesterol (LDL) or 'bad' cholesterol and high-density cholesterol (HDL) or 'good cholesterol'. Measuring these two cholesterols, in addition to another form of fat in the blood called triglycerides, can help doctors predict who is likely to have a heart attack in the future.
