May 24: First test of new chancellor’s credibility
Britain will be a “leading voice for fiscal responsibility” within Europe as it embarks on a sustained programme of cutting public spending, chancellor George Osborne said on Monday. Nick Timmins, public policy editor, talks to Daniel Garrahan about whether Mr Osborne is about to become the most unpopular man in Britain and why this first round of cuts is simply a drop in the ocean.
