Viacom’s Web Search Deal with Yahoo
Viacom announced yesterday that it would use Yahoo to provide search advertising for 33 of its Internet sites. The decision brings a boost to Yahoo’s new Web advertising system, Project Panama. The system is being viewed as a major test in Yahoo providing a competitive advantage to Web search leader Google.According to Reuters, the partnership between Yahoo and Viacom covers broadband sites for its MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon television networks, and it could possibly even expand to more than 140 additional sites worldwide. Viacom Chief Executive Philippe Dauman commented on the issue,“Yahoo has made impressive strides with its new search marketing system.”The Yahoo/Viacom team does pose competition for Google who reveals their power in traditional forms of media such as television, radio, and publishing. Analysts’ reports show this is a renewed force for Yahoo after a year filled with many defeats. UBS analyst Ben Schacter stated,“It’s a positive for Yahoo. They’re getting a good quality partner and inventory, which they need in their network.”
