Sleep-pods designed for office workers to beat out stress in Hongkong.
Stressed out workers in bustling Hong Kong have discovered a new way to tune out the chaos, a short spell in a science-fiction looking Sleep-pod. A 24 hour work culture Hong Kong is a city that never sleeps. But a new concept in power-napping hopes to change all that. In the territory’s busiest shopping district high-tech beds known as sleep-pods are providing stressed-out office workers with the chance to chill out in the city centre. Artist and shopaholic Angela too wants to know if Asia's first sleep-pod justifies the hype. Angela To, Metronaps customer, "I'm interested by its outlook, I don't know what this is like a spacecraft and I'm very interested about the experience of it.” Customers are raised off the ground because, say the bed's designers, gravity boosts relaxation. Head phones provide the finishing touch- soothing new age music. Benjamin Lau, Founder & Chief Operating Officer G.O.D Ltd, "I think it shouldn't be considered sleeping , it's a place to re-energise really so that's what we try and tell people when they do come here, it's to re-energise, it's not to sleep, it's not to be lazy, it's not to get away from work so to speak".While sleeping may be big business in this restless city, Hong Kong's Confederation of Trade Unions say the beds are merely a symptom of a long working hours culture. Mung Siu Tat, Organising Co-ordinator, Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions, "I think the sleep-pod is not the answer to long working hours. I think the positive policy should be taken by the Hong Kong government to set up the legislation on the maximum working hours.” Back at the mall, Angela has emerged from her snooze. “Well...I feel relaxed. I didn’t really get into deep sleep, I can feel my body relaxed and my mind and my breathe and peaceful. It’s quite interesting. ” So these hi-tech captures the 21st century cure to a modern sleep deprived lifestyle. Perhaps its best to sleep on it.
