In a View of the Diamond with Bloomberg Sports, Sports Analyst Rob Shaw previews the Boston Red Sox and what to expect in the 2011 season.  Shaw tells us that the Red Sox are certain World Series contenders and then focuses on some players who may be going under the radar. In the infield, Shaw believes that Jed Lowrie should be considered as the starting shortstop over Marco Scutaro. While Scutaro is solid, Lowrie has a bit more potential, particularly in the power categories. Next, Shaw points to Jacoby Ellsbury in centerfield. After a down season ravaged by injuries, Ellsbury has a lot to prove in order to regain the top prospect status he enjoyed earlier in his career when he hit .300 and swiped 70 bases. In the starting rotation, Josh Beckett is a pitcher to look after. He once had Cy Young stuff, but injuries continue to plague his career. In addition to durability, effectiveness was missing last season as his ERA soared over five. Shaw doesn’t expect him to return to Cy Young contention, but an ERA just over four is realistic with a dozen or more wins. Finally, the last potential hidden jewel is catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The one-time top prospect was traded for Mark Teixeira just a few years back, but has not delivered thus far in his career. A move to Fenway Park in a great lineup could do him well.
