Weighing gull chicks
As part of an ongoing study of Appledore Island’s nesting gull populations, Field Ornithology 2011 participated in weighing and recording measurements and observations of many Great Black-backed Gull nests on the island. This particular check is just weighing the A and B chicks of a nest on the north side of the island, in the midst of the dense subcolony. This is towards the end of the session, as nests were being handed off to long-term interns, so both chicks at this nest ended up color-coded as the A chick. They can be easily told apart by weight, though. A chick must have been hiding when the interns came through! Sorry about the wind noise - the Atlantic Ocean is a bit breezy in spring.
