Winter Safety for Kids
When temperatures dip below freezing and near the single digits, doctors and health care professionals issue frostbite warnings. Frostbite damages the skin and underlying tissue. Erika Janes, R.N., coordinator of Safe Kids Louisville and Jefferson County, a program led by Kosair Children’s Hospital, says frostbite can be prevented by dressing properly for bitter cold and by limiting time spent outdoors. She also recommends ways to warm up potentially frostbitten areas by using warm, not hot, water. She says re-warming tender areas is a slow process. Janes, who works in the Office of Child Advocacy of Kosair Children's Hospital, also told Get Healthy's Jackie Hays that infants should not be out in the cold for extended periods of time.
