Joplin Disaster
iReport — Shortly before 6:00 pm CST May 22nd, 2011, the most devastating tornado ripped though the center of Joplin, MO seen in the past 60 years, leaving in it’s wake destroyed homes, businesses and families. The twister cut literally though the center of this city, population 50,000, with not a single member of this community's residents missing it's deadly fury, either directly, or through the losses endured by friends and family. Several of Joplin's largest employers begin the task of rebuilding, including St. John's Hospital, employer of 2000, where bodies were literally sucked out of the broken windows as this location took the initial beating. Then, as the tornado twisted East, Walmart and Home Depot were destroyed, taking with it the lives of customers and employees. Today, the first funeral of the over 120 victims to date took place. So begins the long and tedious road to recovery, as the community bonds together as one, sharing a grim disaster none will ever forget.
