Bank Records - Paying for Data on Tax Dodgers
The debate continues: should the German government buy illegally obtained information on 1,500 possible tax evaders? Chancellor Merkel and many other politicians are in favor, but some legal experts and members of the political opposition oppose the idea.An informant recently offered to sell the data to the German government for 2.5 million euros. The records would allegedly bring in 100 million euros in federal revenue from Germans who may have hidden money in Switzerland. The Swiss government is eager to have the country removed from an international blacklist of tax havens - but is still coming up short when it comes to cooperating with German authorities.
