As colonial and Soviet era empires collapse, new nations have emerged and seek to assert an identity in the international arena. Today many of these nations must continue to dispute territorial rights and boundary lines with their neighbor states, and face challenges in efforts to reorganize along democratic principles. The battle for national self-determination often becomes an international issue involving the United Nations, the U.S., and regional organizations such as NATO. How should such disputes be handled?
