Raphael Madonna Returns
Italian Renaissance painter Raphael's 'Madonna of the Goldfinch' will be reunited with the public having undergone 10 years of restoratory work. The painting depicts the Virgin with two children symbolising the young Christ and John the Baptist. The goldfinch is a symbol of Christ's future passion. The artwork is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian Renaissance. Raphael painted the panel in around 1506, as a wedding present for a rich wool merchant.
