(Al Jazeera English News Headlines: January 26, 2010) North Korea has reportedly fired artillery shots off its sea border with South Korea, drawing South Korean return fire. Aftershocks further rattled Haiti and its crumbled infrastructure. In Venezuela, two students have been killed in fighting between pro- and anti-government groups, after an opposition television channel was taken off cable airwaves. An explosion in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad killed at least twenty-two; a police crime lab was the apparent target. Nigeria’s president visited the city of Jos to help quell violence between Muslims and Christians. Police in Guatemala have arrested former president Alfonso Portillo after the U.S. requested his extradition for money laundering charges. And in France, a parliamentary committee has recommended a ban on the niqab (the Muslim full-face veil) in public places.
