Unrest in Iran - The End of Ahmadinejad’s Presidency? The Iranian government is using all means at its disposal to suppress opposition demonstrations. Protest marches are being broken up with increasing violence. The death of a young student, Neda, has now given the opposition's struggle a face. She was shot and bled to death at a demonstration and has become a martyr. Many other protestors have also been killed and hundreds of others have been beaten and jailed. The regime in Tehran blames foreigners for escalating the standoff. Journalists from abroad are being expelled from the country. The world is not supposed to see the drama unfolding daily on the streets of Iran's cities.   The opposition has now extended their protests beyond crying out against alleged vote rigging and calls for a new poll. They are now calling fro changes to the system and for far-reaching reforms. The old power structure is being questioned by many reform-oriented politicians and influential clerics. That has caused Iran's ruling elite more concern than the pressure that is coming from the streets. At the heart of the dispute is the most powerful man in Iran, the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He is commander-and-chief of the army, Iran's Revolutionary Guard and heads the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts. He is holding fast to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and want to block another election no matter what the price. But Ahmadinejad, once Khamenei's protege, is now is becoming a problem for Iran's top cleric. Ahmadinejad's dictatorial style, unilateral actions and repression of the mullahs is beginning to damage even Khamenei's credibility. But the Ayatollah's fear of reform is greater still. Opposition leader Mir Hussein Mousavi ostensibly favors liberalization, and the demonstrating masses have elevated him to their standard-bearer. But perhaps, the greater the number of people who the regime can intimidate into staying home, the less sign...
