ACT IV
The North Hollywood shootout was a confrontation between two heavily armed bank robbers, Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, pitted against patrol and SWAT officers of the LAPD in North Hollywood, California on February 28, 1997. It happened when responding patrol officers engaged Phillips, 26, and Matasareanu, 30, as they were leaving a bank they had just robbed. Wearing custom made body armor and armed with 5 fully automatic weapons and 3,300 rounds of ammunition, including armor piercing rounds, the assailants had the officers severely outgunned. Ten officers and seven civilians sustained injuries before both robbers were killed. The fierce gun battle was beamed live to TV viewers across the world. In the end, the confrontation changed the weapons police officers have at their disposal.
