The crisis in the Middle East has helped push the dollar to its lowest real, trade-weighted level since 1973. As James Mackintosh, investment editor, explains, the price of oil in major countries is partly determined by how free each central bank is with monetary policy. Their choice: hurt competitiveness or accept painful oil prices.
