SONY WANTS BMG BACK AND MURDOCH MAKES MORE MONEY
Sony will spend 1.2-billion to repurchase half of Bertlemann’s stake in Sony BMG. The company will now be known as The Sony Music Group, and will be part of the Sony Corporation of America. Meanwhile BMG will turn their focus towards music licensing. Cablevision, the company that unsuccessfully attempted to become private last fall, is now looking at the possibility of spinoffs to increase its shareholder value. The company could boost its value by buying back their own stock or spinning-off its assets. Cablevision spent the last year making big purchases and major acquisitions, and now it is serious about trying to close the value gap between its operating performance and the market value of its shares. Delta has announced that WiFi Internet service will be available to their customers on every one of their domestic flights by the summer of 2009. The use of WiFi will cost between 9-95 and 12-95 per flight. Delta hopes that the WiFi service will help generate more cash during a time when most of the major airlines are struggling. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp reported quarterly earnings that were up 27-percent from the same time last year, at 1.13-billion dollars, with a fiscal year total of 5.38-billion-dollars. Many of News Corp's acquisitions, like SKY Italia have helped the company's profits rise, while ad revenues for assets like Fox News continue to climb. And now the company plans on rolling out an ad-network for the web that will be designed to increase the profitability of MySpace, Sky, and Star web-based properties.
