Business News - Circuit City and the Price of Oil Fall
Storage space for crude oil nears its limit.  And the growing crude inventories pushed oil prices down again, with predictions that demand will fall even further. Paris-based International Energy Agency reduced its global demand expectations by 1 million barrels, to just 85.3 million barrels a day, OPEC cut their demand expectations by 180,000 barrels day and the US Energy Information Administration cut their projections by a more pessimistic 800,000 barrels a day. Meanwhile, the average price for a gallon of gas is up one cent. In his next to last State of the State address, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger focuses on finance as his number one goal. The governor made a startling vow not to advance any policy agenda in 2009 until the state’s $42 billion deficit crisis is resolved. The deficit projected by the middle of next year is three times the size it was just a year ago. Going so far as to ask California lawmakers to forgo their own salaries if they fail to pass the next budget by the June deadline, was the only specific detail in the speech, stating, "if you call a taxi and the taxi doesn't show up, you don't have to pay the driver." Drug giant Pfizer, Incorporated reportedly plans to lay off nearly one third of its 8,000 salespeople. The cut of approximately 2,000 sales jobs is the latest cut under a massive restructure that began two years ago resulting in over 14,000 eliminated jobs. Recently, Pfizer rivals Merck, Wyeth, Schering-Plough and Johnson & Johnson have all cut their respective sales forces. Struggling retail chain, Circuit City announced it will close its remaining 567 stores after trying to unsuccessfully survive bankruptcy, filed in November. This adds another 30,000 plus, to the 2.6 million jobs lost in the last year. The troubled company had been searching for a buyer as late as Thursday of last week, but to no avail.
