World Music: Gypsy Queens and Kings, "Solo Para Ti"
(Balkans/Spain) "The Gypsy Queens and Kings" as a name skirts the legal risk of being sued by you-know-who while letting us know that if we like those guys, we’ll surely like these, plus there are women! In truth, this is an authentic review put together by Asphalt tango, one of the most active promoters of Roma music on the scene. (Viewers may remember the video of Fanfare Ciocarlia that we showed years ago, also on Asphalt Tango.) This troupe is comprised of a swath of Roma communities, from the Balkans to France, specifically Perpignan, where a large community of Roma exist and which is where one hears the Rumba Gitana made popular by the Gypsy Kings, and played here by Kaloomé. Add to that the vocal power of Esma Redzepova (Macedonia) Johnny Iliev (Bulgaria) and the Mahala Rai Brass Band (Romania) and you get exactly what the title says it is. Party on.
