Season 8, Episode 23
PrimeTime Politics Weekend This week, join Martin Stringer and his journalist guests: Louise Elliott, Parliamentary Reporter for CBC Radio, and John Geddes, Ottawa Bureau Chief for Maclean’s magazine. They'll discuss: Skyrocketing summits: The Federal government says the cost of hosting next month's G8 and G20 summits in Huntsville, Ontario and Toronto could now reach at least 930 million dollars. How did the costs escalate so much? We'll look at how the exploding expense tab is playing out, politically. The Auditor General & Parliament: It now appears as if Parliamentarians may work out a compromise to allow Auditor General Sheila Fraser to review Parliament's management and expenses. This, after initially refusing to allow her to do so. How badly mishandled was this by Canada's federal politicians? Minding the Markets: This week, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty released a bill proposing a common, national securities regulator. The legislation, however, will first be referred to the Supreme Court to insure it respects federal and provincial jurisdictions. How would the proposal work? How is it being received, politically? And, Martin speaks with a panel of MPs from the different parties about this week's events in federal politics.
