World Music: Namavao, Marina/The MAGIC POWERS, "Fody Lahy Mena"
(Madagascar) Literally translated as Red Male Sparrow, the theme of the song "Fody Lahy Mena" has its counterparts in many cultures. Two lovers are separated either by circumstance or geography, and they confide their love for one another by making a bird their intermediary. In this case it is a red sparrow that is indigenous to Madagascar, as is everything else about the song, which employs three distinct traditional Malagasy rhythms from the south, northwest and plateau regions. Rather than acting out the story of the song, the band gives us split screens of the recording sessions, some exciting dance moves, and street scenes from the capitol, Antananarivo. All in all, it’s an endearing video.Visit musicians on Myspace
