A Jew in Kumasi: Hebrew, Mosquitoes, and the Deluge
A Jew in Kumasi: Hebrew, Mosquitoes, and the Deluge — We are engaged in an endless, mostly under the surface, inter-species war with mosquitoes. Yet most people know very little about them and the serious harm they cause throughout the world. Is it possible to make a hybrid art/science digital film? I became obsessed with mosquitoes during several visits to Kumasi, Ghana and followed my friend, leading African mosquito biologist, Kofi Owusu-Daaku, around his lab at the University and videotaped him giving a "101" lecture during a field trip to the bush surrounding the city. One of the few white people and Jews to spend an extended time at the University, I enjoyed sharing about my faith and hearing about the remarkably rich religious culture I encountered. I felt challenged to make something that uses the kind of repetition symbolic abstractions that I explore in my art video, with Kofi’s dynamic and concise teaching.
