World Music: Sa DingDing, "Alive"
-Download on iTunes-Buy the album(China) Up in the thin air of the Himalayas are ruins of a vast castle complex. It is all that is left of the 10th century Guge Kingdom, which ruled for 700 years before dying out. During its sway, Tibetan Buddhism flowered, and the site is now an imposing designated National Treasure. For this impressive video Sa Dingding and a crew traversed the mountains, suffering all the travails of working in the high altitude. In our interview with her (soon to be on the website-- so look out for it!) Dingding, who is quite a spiritual person, said that she felt the place was truly magical, and that they all had more of an appreciation for their own existence and relationship to history by traveling there. Thus, the title "Alive" operates on both levels. The video itself is a lavish affair, and a treat for the eyes and ears, as we see our twenty-first century traveler imagining herself back to a mythic time and place — with costumes, sets and extras to boot!
