President Ahmadou Ahidjo et Paul Biya, Cameroun Cameroon 1982
Note: This historical video footage is not mine, it is posted here for educational purposes. In November 1982, President Ahmadou Ahidjo of Cameroon who had ruled the country since independence in 1960, abruptly resigned and handed over power to the Prime Minister Paul Biya. He remained the leader of the ruling Cameroon National Union (CNU) party, the only authorized political party in the country. He soon fell out with his successor who turned out not to be pliable as Ahidjo had expected. He was sentened to death in absentia after a failed coup in April 1984. He died in exile in1989 in Senegal. Just like his predecessor, Paul Biya has clung on to power for more than a quarter century, raising fears about peace and stability when he leaves the presidency.Mentioning Ahidjo’s name was taboo after the 1984 coup, but with disillusionment over Biya's rule growing, more and more images and historic documents from the Ahidjo era are surfacing. Here is a rare video footage and sound archive documenting the historic transition from Ahmadou Ahidjo to Paul Biya in Cameroon. The video footage is not mine, just posted for educational purposes.
