Good Reads
Our Book guru Carole Barrowman will share a list of reads for young people. Boys and Girls alike can head to the library and start reading some of Carole’s picks.  Visit Carole's Website Segment Books for Younger Readers (8-13yrs) Studies show that reading as few as four books over the summer can keep our kids at their reading grade level. This is harder to achieve with boys in this age group than girls. Girls will read books marketed or written for boys, but boys will often not read a book if they think it’s for girls. I’ve picked four books for girls and four for boys in this age group. A great website for regular updates on books for reluctant boy readers and for excellent strategies to keep them reading is www.gettingboystoread.com Some suggestions from this site if you have a reluctant boy reader: Make reading a physical activity Encourage movement as your boys read. Let them have lots of breaks during their reading time. If you’re reading aloud with them, let them act out parts of the books. Or pick books that can be incorporated into their games and play. Make sure dad is reading too. Encourage the other males in the house to be reading role models. Respect what your son wants to read. Don’t make him feel his reading choices are less worthy than anyone else’s. Avoid “Are you really going to read another book about pirates/football/airplanes…” Give a magazine subscription to your reluctant reader. Boys often prefer to read smaller, manageable chunks of information. Plus it’s cool to get your own magazine in the mail ever week or month. Four Books tween girls “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins (Catching Fire, Mockingjay) The first of a dystopian trilogy set in a future where children have to fight in the Hunger Games (broadcast live on TV )to save their lives. Really suspenseful, well-written and dark. “Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging” by Louise Rennison My daughter, Clare, and her friends loved this series. Main character is Bri...
