NC:WWI BOMB DETONATION
Shot 07/03/2011.## A bomb squad has detonated a live World War I artillery shell at a Pitt County home after a man called deputies asking them to dispose of the bomb. According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office a man that lives on Abbott Farm Rd. called them about disposing the bomb Saturday afternoon. WITN talked with that man, Mike Gardner, who says he found the bomb around 10 years ago near a dumpster in Grimesland. Gardner says he's had the bomb ever since. Gardner says after all these years he no longer wanted a bomb in his home so he called the Sheriff's office for advice. An Explosive Ordinance Disposal team from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base was then called in. The sheriff's office says the EOD team found out the bomb was a live WWI artillery shell. They say the EOD team dug a hole in the area and detonated the bomb early Sunday morning around 3 a.m. making a loud noise. People in the area were evacuated as precautionary measure. ##
