Dangers in the dark
This clip contains two extracts from a larger film about preparations for war in 1939. In the first, the hazards of the blackout are identified, particularly for travellers on the road. In the second clip, the film provides some handy advice. One of the key defences against possible air raids was the blackout. If bombers could not see any lights at night they would find it impossible to hit their targets. On the whole the blackout was very effective. However road accidents went up dramatically in the early stages of the war. The blackout also seems to have encouraged crime. The film is instructive yet it also takes a conversational tone. It is more like the advice of a wise parent or relation rather than a government.
