The SEO and SEM Conference Scene Expands
Search Engine Optimization / Marketing is a bit underrepresented on the conference and exposition scene. While growing in number, we could still stand to increase the frequency and amount of events. As it stands, Search Engine Strategies may be the leading conference in this arena and for good reason. First held in 1999 by Search Engine Watch and moderated by guru, Danny Sullivan, SES has survived through eight shows in various cities on the east and west coast.Cox Target Media’s Becca Anderson and Optek’s Paul Fischer are regular attendees to SES and have been to three consecutive shows; including the most recent where they granted an audience with WebProNews. Like other SES veterans, Anderson and Fischer took a lot away from the show… but felt that maybe they’ve surpassed its intended demographic.Fischer shared that during his first SES, he’d felt overwhelmed… unable to attend all the valuable sessions, yet caught up in the subsequent year, leaving his third show more akin to a refresher course. While pointing out valuable sessions, the duo had some suggestions for improvement.“I like seeing a lot of the case studies… when they show a bad site and then they explain and go through what they did to improve it… go into depth more with the actual data.” says Fischer.Anderson longs for more technical detail.“I’d like to see more more technical things… I really enjoyed the CSS and the AJAX session… something more technical that I can take back.”As SES continues its ever important presence in the SEO / SEM communities, we welcome its return, yet pine for the addition of other opportunities. Danny Sullivan’s new venture, “Search Marketing Expo” (intended for more advanced attendees) will see it’s first showing this year and we couldn’t be happier.
