2008年3月4日に姜恩柱報道官が記者会見を行い、中国の2008年度（1-12月）国防予算は前年度実績比17.6％増の4177億元（約6兆600億円）に上ることを公式に表明した。これは2007年末の為替レートで換算すると572億ドルになる。西側諸国の見解によれば実際の軍事費はさらに大きいとみられるが、公表額においてもフランスを上回り、米国、英国に次ぐ世界3位の軍事費になった公算が大きい。
