The south has churned out more than its fair share of memorable rappers but few have emerged with a flavor that is as stylistically unique as that of Pinney Woods.  Pinney Woods takes its name from the Chattanooga neighborhood where the duo, which once comprised Sutta Kane and Brikk – cut their teeth on the music of hip-hop’s finest. It is a name that continues to stand as the group’s moniker despite Brikk’s untimely and tragic death a year ago. Pinney Woods’ debut CD, “Eclipse,” released by El Sobrante, California-based Black Ice Records, is a fine example of southern hip-hop seasoned with west coast flavor. Says Sutta Kane, “I guess it would be a southern feel but it’s been stretched so much that it’s universal. The only thing that really lets you know that it’s southern is my accent.” Content-wise “Eclipse” covers all the bases; it speaks the language of everyday people but somehow manages to do so in a way that has yet to be mastered by other rappers. Add Sutta Kane’s melodic flow and you’ve got the makings of a new brand of hip-hop that is at once entertaining and groundbreaking. “I just want to take people on a rollercoaster ride,” he says. “I want my music to make you happy one minute and mad the next. I’m saying things in a way that a lot of people wouldn’t say them.” Sutta’s clear-cut favorite on the album is “Paperchase,” featuring Bobby Valentino. “That’s an honest song,” he says. “It pulls no punches. It’s me talking about going out there and getting that money. It’s a paper chase for me and I’m not afraid to admit it.” But just as he knows how to keep it real about his quest for money, he also knows how to inspire and motivate; case in point: the uplifting and irresistible “I’m Gon Be Aiight,” featuring none other than Lil Wayne. “This song is for people who know how to hold their head up and let the world know that no matter what I might be going through, I’m gon’ get through it.
